Up, Up and Away

My two-year old son is obsessed with Superman, and I don’t know where it came from. We watched part of Superman Returns when my Mom visited in early October. Soon after, Eddie started to say a word that sounded like “shopping,” but wasn’t. Eventually, he was able to more clearly articulate his preference: “Soup-man.” Now he actually pronounces the full name very well: he even started climbing on an end table to retrieve the Superman Returns DVD from the shelf. He brings it to me, and says, “Watch. Superman. Okay.” It’s one of the few live-action films he pays attention to. As an added bonus, when we’re watching TV and he hears the “Scrubs” theme song, he sings the word “Superman” at the end. It’s absolutely adorable. As I watch the many incarnations of Superman with my son, I reflect on how when I was young, we used to watch marathons of the old “Superman” series on Thanksgiving. My father always seemed so saddened by the death of George Reeves. Dad would have wanted to see Hollywoodland, I’m sure. He also would have loved to see how his grandson has grown so fond of Superman so quickly, and seemingly on his own. Unfortunately, my father has also gone up, up, and away. And we have no hope of his return. So my hope is that you can see little Eddie from way up there, Dad. He seems to take after you already.

  1. Very cute. My daughter had a similar fascination with Austin Powers whenever it was on (the edited, TV versions of course!).
